Fife Arabic Society celebrated Eid ul-Fitr

Fife Arabic Society celebrated Eid ul-Fitr the end of Ramadan on Sunday 14th of October, in Buckhaven. The family sporting event was supported by FRAE Fife, Interactivesport and Show Racism The Red Card project.

The Chairperson of Fife Arabic Society Dr Ali, Chairman of FRAE Fife Adnan Miyasar and representatives of Fife Polish Association MOST were just some of over 100 people who turned up at the Community Centre in Buckhaven.

Eid is an Islamic holiday, which falls after 29 or 30 days of fasting and marks the end of the fasting period of Ramadan. The Eid ul-Fitr means the Festival of Breaking the Fast and on that day the Muslims all over the world are feasting and celebrating with family and friends.

“This holiday, regarding its importance for the Muslims, can be compared with Christmas in the western culture” said Mr. Miyasar.

The event gathered local Arabs, people from other cultures and different parts of Scotland. They all took part in sporting activities provided by Interactivesport, feast consisted of great choice of traditional Arabic dishes and simply enjoyed company of relatives and friends. Interactivesport coaches were given gifts as a sign of appreciation from the Arabic Community.

FRAE Fife Community Development Link Worker Tecla Wight reitrated that "it gave me an opportunity to meet women from e.g. Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries. The women had fun by engaging in different sporting activities and discussed issues that affect them as Arabic women. One woman commented ‘It is good to get together at these celebrations away from the hustle and bustle of every day life’"

“It was a great event and also magnificent opportunity to integrate”, said one of the attendants Jerzy Gostomczyk.

“Arabic people are very kind and hospitable, we would love to come more often to events like this one” he added.
