Achieving Better Rights and Services for Ethnic Minority Communities Living and Working in Fife

Interactive Sport

Interactivesport is a sports project that works towards using sports as a means of integration and breaking down barriers between Ethnic Minority communities and the indigenous white community in Fife. Interactivesport also works towards creating opportunities for Ethnic Minority communities to participate and get involved in sporting activities locally and nationally. Integration is the key word of this project.

basketballscotland hope to be able to start delivering UKCC Level 2 courses from October 08.

The Level 2 qualification provides a prospective coach with a general overview of all aspects of basketball and sports coaching and enables the holder the ability to work independently to plan, deliver and review coaching sessions without supervision.

There are a number of pre requisties for the Level 2 course. Candidates are required to:

- hold the UKCC Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Basketball or equivalent

You can find out information about child protection and first aid courses here.

Funding from sportscotland has allowed basketballscotland to support volunteers who are attending approved child protection training courses and other volunteer courses. You can find further information about basketballscotland Volunteer Development Grants here.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Basketball Grampian is running a UKCC Level 1 course on the 19th of July and the 16th of August in Garioch Leisure Centre.

OBJECTIVES

To create awareness about the barriers Ethnic Minority communities face in accessing sporting facilities.

To create awareness and make available information of sporting programmes to young people.

To highlight programmes and projects designed to increase representation of Ethnic Minority communities in sport related activities in line with the opening up of opportunities towards 2012-2014.

To underline the use of sport as a medium to explore cultural diversity and promote understanding.

To highlight the need for integration of young people from Ethnic Minority communities into existing sports development pathways and enhance opportunities to reach personal goals and aspirations.

Interactivesport is sponsored by the Local Action Fund (Community Safety Grant) and Sportscotland.

FRAE Fife previously received funding from Sportscotland to deliver sporting opportunities for ethnic minority communities. This funding ended on 31 March 2006. £5,187 per annum for 3 years was secured from Sportscotland for a further project but this is primarily focussed on cultural awareness training and coach development with only a small element of direct delivery of sports sessions.

In order not to lose the opportunity for participation in sports which was greatly valued by individuals and communities, Ade Johnson Development Worker pursued other funding options. Theses efforts paid off when Community Safety funding of £17,024 per year for 2 years was secured. Unfortunately this funding is geographically restricted to Central Fife.

Basketball Level 1 Referee Course

SportTayside & Fife / basketballtayside & fife are running a Level 1 Basketball Referee course on Sunday 4th November 2007.
The course will run from 9:30am to 4:30pm and be split into three parts*:

Classroom Theory Session 9:30am to 11:30am

On Court Theory Session 11:30am to 12:30pm

Practical Assessments / Experience 1:00pm - 4:30pm (refereeing T&F Under 14 Development League games)

Venue (for all parts of the course)

Mayfield Sports Centre
(High School of Dundee)
Arbroath Road
Dundee
DD4 7HS

Cost

£30.00 per candidate - SportTayside & Fife has some subsidy available on agreement by the candidate to officiate in local development leagues and competitions during 2007/08.

* Candidates must attend all parts of the course in order to gain the Level 1 qualification.

Course Tutor

Chris Dodds, FIBA International Referee with support from experienced Tayside & Fife referees and referee tutors.

Candidate Requirements

Potential candidates already have some basketball knowledge as a player, coach, table official or parent/spectator and:

+ know the basic rules of the game
+ are mature, honest and open minded
+ are self confident but not cocky, and have good reactions
+ are reasonably fit and mobile around a basketball court
+ can cope with pressure and manage difficult situations
+ have good communication and people management skills
+ are willing to put themselves and their decisions under the challenge of the participants
+ are willing to be a referee and think they will enjoy it
+ are willing to officiate in local schools, youth and eventually over 18 competitions
+ like the possibility of earning a few extra pounds a week from game fees

Not all these characteristics are required for Level 1 referees, but they are a good indication of what a good referee has or will develop.

In particular refereeing can be a good source of income for Students or young people, as well as developing man management and interpersonal skills for other areas in life. Anyone under the age of 35 will also have the opportunity to progress on the basketballscotland referee pathway and could end up as a BBL or even FIBA International Referee travelling the world!

Prospective candidates are able to phone or email me to find out more information or address any fears.

Other notes

A FOX40 whistle, course notes and FIBA Rule book are provided as part of the course, and for the theory session note taking equipment is required. Candidates should come appropriately dressed for the practical session (Trainers, dark trousers/jogging bottoms, grey/neutral colour t shirt.) A referee top is not provided - a grey polo shirt or grey sports top is sufficient for this stage of a refereeing career. Alternatively, they can be bought from basketballscotland.

Course numbers are a maximum of 16 and places are available on a first come basis. I urge you to canvas members of your club, school or organisation and see if there is anyone with good basketball knowledge and who would be interested in progressing as a basketball referee. Please distribute thsi round your contacts.

Hopefully this course will be well attended and a success in recruiting new and capable referees for basketball in Tayside & Fife.

Tayside & Fife Basketball Clubs / Interested Parties

Under 14 Boys and Under 14 Girls Tournament - Sunday 4th November 2007

I am looking to run an initial "tournament style" event to provide competitive opportunities for Under 14 players in the area, and also measure the interest for further events like this during December through to May 2008. This will be discussed at the Tayside & Fife AGM on Monday 17th September.

If your club would like to enter a team, please let me have a provisional note of interest by Monday 8th October 2007 by return email.

Details

Venue - Mayfield SC, Dundee (twin Court facility)

Date - Sunday 4th November 2007

Duration - 12:30pm to 4:30pm

Cost Per Team entered - will be between £30.00 and £40.00 per team, subject to number of entries (girls' cost may be less depending on number of teams).

Referees - will be organised for the day, cost included in entry fee.

Table Officials - teams entered will be responsible for timing and scoring games when they are not playing (on a rostered basis).

Potential Team Entries - Boys - Arbroath Musketeers, Dundee Sharks, Montrose Ravens, Menzieshill Madsons, Dunfermline Reign, Dunfermline Steel, Glenrothes Raptors, Perth Phoenix, Kinross Cavaliers

Potential Team Entries - Girls - Arbroath Musketeers, Dundee Sharks, Forfar Girls, Menzieshill Madsons, Perth Phoenix, Kinross Cavaliers

Schools - I do not see any reason why schools should not enter a team. It is not restricted purely to club sides, although some schools will have players
already playing for clubs.

Further Dates - will be organised monthly from December 2007 through to May 2008.

With the level and interest of under age basketball in the region I really feel that events like this should be the norm and not the exception. Given the list of potential entrants we could have much more regular basketball events and grounding for young players, coaches and officials alike. Conversely, it cannot happen without support from the players, coaches and officials.
